Biennale Cinema 2023/ 80th Venice International Film Festival
The 80th Venice International Film Festival is organised by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by
Alberto Barbera. It took place at Venice Lido from 30th August to 9th September 2023. The
purpose of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms as
art, entertainment and as an industry. It also organises retrospectives and tributes to major figures
as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.
The Venice Film Festival is the world’s oldest film festival, founded in 1932.
Together with the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival, it is part of the “Big Three”,
which are the three most famous and important film festivals in the world.
The festival is part of the Venice Biennale, founded in 1895 by the Venetian City Council.
The Golden Lion (in Italian: Leone d’oro) is the highest prize given to a film at the Venice Film
Festival, while the Silver Lion is given to the best director.
Through the years, the event attracted Italian and international film personalities, and launched
the careers of many directors, including Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni.
However, the Film Festival is not only about films: every year actors, actresses and important
people from all the world attend the Gala Dinner organized by the Venice Biennale at the Hotel
Excelsior.
