Frittelle, galani and Magic: Experiencing the Venice Carnival like a local

The Venice Carnival is one of the most fascinating and iconic events in the world, renowned for its elaborate masks, lavish costumes, and the magical atmosphere that envelops the lagoon city. This celebration, deeply rooted in history, is much more than a mere festival: it is a symbol of culture, history, and art.

Today, the Venice Carnival is an international event that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. The program includes parades, theatrical performances, concerts, and the famous Flight of the Angel (Il Volo dell’Angelo), which officially opens the festivities with a woman “flying” from the bell tower of St. Mark’s to the square below. Most of these events, such as the Flight of the Angel, are free: you can go to St. Mark’s Square to watch it but keep in mind if you wanna have a good spot, you should go earlier – a lot of people are gonna be there.

This year, the Carnival takes place from February 14th to March 4th. The most important events are on the weekends and Martedì Grasso (Shrove Tuesday) which is the last day of the Carnival.

During Carnival, Venetians immerse themselves in a blend of tradition, conviviality, and relaxing moments, striving to experience the event authentically, away from the tourist crowds that often characterize the historic center.

The entire city is in a festive mood, for this reason you can find masked people everywhere, not just in St. Mark’s Square. Also, through the Venetian calli you might come across people playfully throwing confetti at you – don’t be startled, it’s all part of the tradition.
